In ancient times the people of Awaji presented food to the royal court. The
reason for this was that the landform, surrounded by sea and with a mild climate,
meant many kinds of fruit and vegetables grew on the island, and many fresh fish
and shellfish could be caught in the surrounding sea. This is still true today,
and Awaji is well-known for dishes of sea bream, octopus, Conger eel, and Conger
pike, and also for the tender Awaji Beef.
